Thomas Jefferson is the foremost authority on liberty in America, since he was one of the men who invented it. And he said that Liberty comes from God, and not from men.

When he wrote the Declaration of Independence, he was speaking for the vast majority of Americans, who are not willing to surrender our God-given liberty.

Listen to the words of Thomas Jefferson as he speaks from beyond the grave—in which he must be spinning:

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.

The God who gave us life gave us liberty at the same time; the hand of force may destroy, but cannot disjoin them.

And can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are a gift of God?

The two enemies of the people are criminals and government, so let us tie the second down with the chains of the Constitution so the second will not become the legalized version of the first.

If a nation expects to be ignorant and free . . . it expects what never was and never will be.

The issue today is the same as it has been throughout all history, whether man shall be allowed to govern himself or be ruled by a small elite.
