Radhanath Swami on being Poor
Radhanath Swami says that if we want actually the mercy of the Lord, we have to feel poor in heart. Jesus said, “Blessed are the poor in spirit. They will inherit the Kingdom of God.” What does it mean to be poor in spirit? How many people in this world want to be poor. Most people in the world work to become wealthier, wealthier and wealthier, but to be poor in heart really means to be humble. Poorness of heart really means humility. A poor person is one who is hungry, a poor person is one who doesn’t have anything. A poor person is one who really feels himself to be in great need. To help the needy means to help the poor. A poor person is one who is really in need. The ones who are rich they think they don’t need anything, they think that everyone needs me. and they think they have so much.
A poor person understands that he has nothing and thinks that i am in great need and i am hungry. So those who hunger, those who thirst for Krsna, they will get Krsna,.those who hunger, those who thirst for proper life in devotion to Krsna, they will attain that by Krsna’s mercy. So to be poor in spirit or heart means whether we are insignificant field worker or King Nabhi we understand that we are hungry for the mercy of the Lord. When Arjuna was arguing with Krsna, he really thought he was full of knowledge and he was speaking, but then when he actually came to the point of knowledge, he became very hungry. He was like a poor man – a man in need for directions, guidance, shelter of Krsna. So that is required.
Radhanath Swami continues that we must be convinced that we are poor whatever our material status is. We must be hungry, we must be thirsty. we must be desperate for Krsna’s mercy. We must understand that i am completely under the control of material nature. I am not independent. So to get Krsna’s mercy, we have to be poor.
